Grapefruit is a unique fruit known for its bitter sweetness and is grown in many varieties; mainly determined by its color of ruby red, white or pink. The darker, more reddish-orange tones, provide the phytochemical called Lycopene, which may have a beneficial role in preventing cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol, macular degeneration and atherosclerosis. Grapefruits may also be a natural anti-aging fruit as they contain large quantities of spermidine which helps to rebuild aging cells. In addition, grapefruits are a low calorie fruit, contain a multitude of vitamins and minerals, fiber and yield a low glycemic response making it ideal for diabetics. Do take caution with grapefruits, as they increase the effects of many prescription drugs.
